POTENTIAL KINETIC ENERGY

Oil Barrel in orbit 4446 kilometers above the earth

A single drum[1] of crude oil yields roughly 7.7 Gigajoules of energy[2]; if this drum fell out of orbit it would impact with the same 7.7 Gigajoules of kinetic energy, approximately equal to 1.8 tons of TNT. Over 86 million barrels of oil are consumed per day by humanity as of 2013[3], for a combined yield equivalent to more than two and a half times the Tsar Bomb[4], the largest nuclear weapon ever detonated.
